The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at each end of the field

After a drab midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on target, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established strikers - had scored only one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.
