Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these treatments must be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
