Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
