It has been 30 years after the original Toy Story film debuted, establishing the animation giant as a leading film company and introducing viewers to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.

In 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but leaving viewers curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang

The preview reveals Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a brand new plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.

Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the teaser doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is back with his friends in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (the actress), journeying with a fair and helping prize toys locate loving owners.

Surely, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in Bonnie's room without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have come back with Woody. And where is Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some aspects are continuing from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser displays the badge attached to her outfit.

It is hoped she is remains the key figure among the group.

Toy Story 5 debuts on the scheduled date.
