A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
